Food Bank Collection

Thank you for supporting our Harvest Collection for families who need support in Madeley. Today a volunteer came along to school to collect all the donations.  She has sorted all the items and let me know that we collected enough food to support 13 people for 3 days!!  Thank you for your continued support to our community projects.

Operation Christmas Child

Today School Council have hosted a whole school assembly introducing the new School Council members. We have discussed the role of the School Council and the responsibilities and qualities of the members. We also talked about Operation Christmas Child and asked for suitable donations. Details can be found in a letter sent home tonight which has been written by two school Council Members with the help of Mrs Davies. If you would like to see a change in school or have an idea for a school project, do not hesitate to go and speak to your class councillor!

World War 1 visit

Today, the children had a special visitor in the form of Corporal Frederick Horsnell (children’s author John Malam in role). The children had the chance to follow Frederick (Fred) from his life as a small boy, to a gardener, all the way to the front line. The children created a chronological recount of Corporal Horsnell's life, in the form of an A3 storyboard, in their own words and pictures. The children thoroughly enjoyed the session with John and some children were even given the opportunity to try on his “very itchy and heavy” uniform jacket.

World War 1 visit

Today was very exciting! We had a special visitor in school. Corporal Frederick Horsnell (children's author John Malam) showed us his World war 1 uniform. The children then designed their own soldier's uniform, however we feel they would not provide very good camouflage in the trenches or french woodland!

Author Visit

Today at The Meadows we welcomed a very special visitor - the author John Malam.  Our children are very passionate about their reading, so to meet a real author was something we have all been looking forward to!!

It was lovely to see so many children purchase a signed copy of one of his books.  I hope you sharing them at home.

WW1 Week - CL3

This past week the children have been learning all about World War 1. So far we have researched the reasons for World War 1, artefacts from the war, as well as how the government encouraged men to enlist. Over the week, the children have been creating their own propaganda posters to persuade someone to join the army. Later in the week, the children will also be exploring rationing by creating their own ration books.

Today we had the privilege of welcoming Corporal Fred Horsnell (author John Malim in role) into our class. He shared with us his life story - particularly his time as a soldier during WW1. We were able to find out about: his family background; how he enrolled in the army; where he was posted to in Europe; his time on the western front and life in the trenches. He shared with us the letters he wrote to his mother and father.

Great War

Class 2 have all been enjoying learning about the Great Fire of London and are excited to be learning about another significant historical event, the ‘Great War’. We are holding our WW1 themed week this week in school and I am especially looking forward to the children meeting Corporal Frederick Horsnell (children’s author Johan Malam in character).
