Reading for Pleasure Class 4 -Moz the Monster Advert

During the course of the week, in Class 4 we have been promoting Reading for Pleasure by exploring the John Lewis advert about ‘Moz the Monster’.

Mrs Edwards introduced the class to the advert through our Key Stage assembly on Monday. Following the assembly we explored the importance of sleep in our PSHE lessons. We explored the factors affecting the boy's sleep in the video; we inferred meaning about what the monster could represent such as nightmares, an overactive imagination or worries –all of which can prevent us from sleeping. Following that we identified the impact of a lack of sleep had on the boy including:

  • Lack of concentration.
  • A detrimental impact on his relationships with his family and friends.
  • Lack of progress in his work.

We discussed how a lack of sleep can affect us. They children thought that:

  • It could affect our learning.
  • It could affect our concentration.
  • It could lead to us be injured or in danger.

In addition, we looked at how the lack of sleep can affect our health and can lead to possible illnesses such as high blood pressure, heart conditions and obesity.

The children then designed posters to encourage other children to have positive sleeping habits. They generated ideas that children could use to help them get to sleep. Here are a few examples:

In RE, we explored traditions revolving around Christmas. We discussed what the children always associated with Christmas and compared it to the religious meaning for Christmas. We explored (using our thinking hats) whether Christmas is more about presents for some people rather than having a religious significance. The discussions were very interesting and pupils were exceptionally respectful of different opinions presented.

In Art, the pupils created their own monster using two mediums –collage and paint. Here are some examples of their creations:

In English, the pupils have generated figurative language to describe Moz. They have compared him to another monster such as Chef from Trolls and explored the similarities and differences between the characters. Today the pupils have using the language that they have generated to write their own poem about Moz. A few examples can be seen below:

Finally, in Guided Reading the children have been exploring the role of a Children’s Laureate. They have:

  1. Identified what a Laureate is.
  2. Recognised examples of previous Children’s Laureates such as Anne Fine, Anthony Browne, Quentin Blake and Chris Riddell.
  3. Explored a biograph of Chris Riddell, the author who believes that the advert plagiarises his book called ‘Mr Underbed’.

Well done children – you have really understood our stimulus this week and I am looking forward to seeing your Writing for Pleasure on Friday which you could base on this advert.
